Starting an Online Business
The internet is arguably the greatest medium to have been made available to businesses over the past 10 years. Just by building a website you are able to promote your products or services to literally anyone in the world as long as they have a connection and indeed, the means to find you.
The internet is growing in popularity with each passing year and faster internet connections allow users a much richer online experience. The advances in internet technology have seen numerous opportunities to make money online which were just not there even as short as 10 years ago. If you want to claim your share of the pie, then it simply a matter of determining the right business opportunity for you.
With the sheer number of online business opportunities presenting themselves to you every day it can be confusing which path to follow. If you know someone who runs an online business then see what they are doing to get an insight into what can be successful. However, before you decide what to base your business around, you must be knowledgeable yourself about the niche and subsequently the products or services you are selling if you are to make your own business a success.
To begin with, you should treat an online business in much the same way as a traditional, “bricks and mortar” business. By this I mean you should only become involved in a niche, or area, of something you are knowledgeable and passionate about and are keen on selling to a wider market. You are able to sell products or services, digital or physical. It doesn’t really matter. What is important is that you know about what you propose to sell or provide to give you an edge over your competitors.
You will realise why it is so important to know what you are dealing with when potential customers begin to inquire about the products or service you are promoting. If you have any ambition of closing the sale then you must have the ability and competence to answer any questions you receive truthfully and accurately.
Today’s internet customers are a lot more savvy than they were 10 years ago so you must ensure your website is easy to navigate and informative. A clipart image and a price list simply will not do. A comprehensive description, articles and even a frequently asked querstions (FAQ) list will be valuable to potential customers and will also cut down on the amount of repetitive questions you receive.
To succeed with your own online business you must be confident in what you are selling. When selling anything, whether online or offline, customer trust and your reputation is paramount to success. You must ensure your customers are delighted with both your product and the customer service you provide because they will then recommend you to other people. Word of mouth is the greatest form of advertising around - it’s free, it’s “viral” and it’s highly effective.
You can install as many “tell a friend” scripts into your website as you wish, but unless you provide a top class service, they will never be used!
Knowledge, passion and fantastic customer service are just a few elements you need to provide to make your online business work and survive beyond the first 12 months. Make sure you stick to these simple rules, try not to “bluff” your way to success and you will start to earn a lot of money for your efforts.
